Target Population:
High School students Level 1 or 2 on the FCAT SSS
Grade 11

This class is designed to develop and refine reading strategies for students to ensure success in all their educational endeavors and requirements across the curriculum. In order for this class to be successful, all students must approach the class with an open mind and the willingness to achieve.

Class Supplies:
Student should be prepared to write in class everyday.

1. 2 (two) pencils and 2 (two) pens.
2. One notebook with paper to write. Can be spiral, or loose leaf, but should be able to be torn out and handed in.

3. One notebook (composition or other) for notetaking purposes.

Class Rules:
In order to create a safe learning environment students must follow these rules:
*Student I.D.’s must be worn and visible in order to enter class, and exit class, including restroom breaks. *Bookbags and purses will be stored underneath the desk on the storage rack during the entire class period.

1. Come to class on time and prepared to work, and take your assigned seat.
2. Begin journal or warm-up assignment on the board as soon as you enter.
3. No gum chewing, eating or drinking in class.
4. No cells phones, Ipods, or video games in class.
*Cell phones & Ipods will be confiscated if they are out during class time, and turned into the office for retrieval by parent or guardian. A referral will be generated to the appropriate administrator for discipline. No exceptions!

*Parents please use the school phone number 754-322-1400 to deliver a message to your child. Texting your child during class time is disruptive to the class.
5. Use appropriate language at all times.
6. Respect yourself, your classmates, your teacher and school property.
7. Stay seated and wait to be dismissed by the teacher at the end of class.
8. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized by the teacher in order to speak in class, or leave your seat.
9. No sleeping.

Consequences:

1. Verbal warning
2. Teacher/Student conference and seat change.
3. Phone call home.
4. Detention
5. Referral to Guidance or Administration

Evaluation: I understand that my grade will be based on classwork and class participation, tests and quizzes, projects, and journals or warm-up exercises.
1. Classwork/class participation: 30%
2. Tests/Quizzes: 25 %
3. Projects: 25%
4. Journals/warm-up exercises: 20%

Attendance and Class Participation/Exams and Make-up work:

Students are expected to be present each day for class and for all tests, and receive a satisfactory grade. Students must make up any missed classwork and exams. In order for students to have adequate time to finish make-up work, the School Board of Broward County mandates that students be allowed two days for each EXCUSED absence only. Make-up work can be found on this class webpage.
