Word Part Demonstration directions

What are word parts?  Go here first.

The objective of this presentation is for you to teach the class about word parts found in common vocabulary words.

One of the best ways to learn anything is to teach it to someone else .

Once you become aware of the numerous word parts that are found in the English language,

you will begin to look at words in a whole different way.

Find a word

1.  Select a vocabulary word from any subject that contains word parts.  Possible sources are vocabulary builder on number2.com, Teen Biz, poetry, or even your other classes:  English, science, social studies, or health. Particularly science vocab is made up of countless word parts.  Still having trouble finding a word that contains word parts?  This site is an excellent resource for identifying some of the most common word parts.

2.  Make sure your word is not already on the list and sign up for your word.

Assignment

3.  Use the Dictionary application on the Mac laptop (best choice) to research the ORIGIN (not derivatives) of your word.  If you are not on a Mac, then you can search online dictionaries until you find the info you need.  Don't guess.  Accuracy is essential!

4.  On the index card you were given, write the WORD, DEFINITION, WORD PARTS, MEANING OF WORD PARTS and WORD IN CONTEXT.   Extra credit will be given if also show other words which use the same word part(s).

Example:

console = comfort

con = with

sol = soothe

You can console yourself with the thought that you did your best.

other words:  solace, consolable, consoler, consolation

5.  You will present your word information to the class.  You may use the board or the photo projector.  Extra credit will be given for creativity in your presentation.  Pictures, short skits or (dress-code appropriate) costumes are good ways to do this.
