Welcome Knights, and to English I at Monarch High School. You are about to embark on a very important journey! English will not only teach you the life skills of reading and writing, but shall bring you knowledge of various classic writers from many genres! I wish you the best of luck as you start your first year of high school at Monarch. Prepared with the Knights’ Code and the essential tools of knowledge, you shall succeed on this grand journey!

Curriculum

This is what you will study over the course of the semester!

Readings

Throughout the semester, we will be examining our written works to see how the authors explore the universal themes of love and death.  Additionally, we concentrate on analyzing the literary elements of plot, conflict, setting, characterization, and imagery.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
Short fiction by Guy de Maupassant, Tim O'Brien, James Thurber, Edgar Allan Poe, Richard Connell, Sandra Cisneros and other authors
Non-fiction by Toni Morrison, Sandra Cisneros, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela
Poetry by Edgar Allan Poe and other poets
Mythology – excerpts from The Odyssey
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird

Writing

Expository, narrative, and descriptive paragraphs and/or essays
Letters of complaint
Formal and informal e-mail messages
Correct documentation of sources in researched writing
Creative writing of poems or stories

Grammar and Vocabulary

Grammar with emphasis on the parts of speech, capitalization, punctuation, and SVO (Subject-Verb-Object) sentences
Vocabulary enhancement including emphasis on roots, prefixes, and suffixes

Academic Dishonesty

Under NO circumstances are you to copy someone else’s work and use it as your own! This includes and is not limited to copying from the Internet, your neighbor, a book, etc. This rule also applies to paraphrasing. If you are caught plagiarizing or allowing your work to be plagiarized, you will automatically receive a zero. Additionally, you will be subject to disciplinary consequences in accord with the Student Code of Conduct. Do not risk receiving a zero!
