Art History Movie!

A&E's Biography Series-Leonardo da Vinci/Renaissance Master

50 minutes

Gesture Drawing
Inspiration: Leonardo da Vinci
http://thevirtualinstructor.com/gesturedrawing.html

1. •Select 5 VERY DIFFERENT human photo images from m agazines. Select interesting “gestures”.
•On the images, draw over the images suggesting only the simplified gestures of each image. (apply what you learned from the website demonstration).
MATERIALS: magazines, Sharpie marker
2. •Stand up at your table.
•Using the magazine images, draw the “gesture” image you created on top of the magazine image onto 18 x 24 paper. DRAW LARGE…think of the composition of the whole picture plane.
•Do one for each magazine image you have (on the same paper). OVERLAP the images to create interesting areas. Change the color of the marker for each image.
MATERIALS: Magazine images from #1, 18 x 24 practice paper and 5 different colored markers.
3. •Using a live model, apply what you learned during the magazine assignment to the human “real” model.
•Stand up. Practice 5 poses of the live model on the same paper. Remember to overlap and change markers for each pose.
•Using the black marker, go over lines that separate the images to create the “bodies”.
MATERIALS: 18 x 24 practice paper, 5 colored markers, black marker, live model.
4. FINAL DRAWING
•Using a live model, apply what you learned in #3. You will have 5 poses. You may use black paper and colored pencil if you wish.
•Separate the poses with black or white marker/pencil. Fill in areas of the drawing with color. Use the color wheel to guide you in your choices
MATERIALS: 18 x 24 white or black paper, 5 colored markers or colored pencils, black or white marker or black or white colored pencil, color wheels

Trompe-l'œil, which can also be spelled without the hyphen in English as trompe l'oeil (French for 'deceive the eye'), is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions.

1. Collect materials for drawing.  Construct your working model.

2. Set up your model so you have strong light and shadow.  Be aware of placement in order to replicate the position again if you do not finish drawing in one sitting.

3. Draw EXACTLY  what you see to make all of your objects look real..."trying to fool the eye!"
