Breadth #5  Rhythm/movement using form

Form-3 dimensional/takes up space/geometric or free form

Movement-eye travel directed by visual design in a work of art

Rhythm-a sense of movement achieved by the repetition of visual units, the use of measured       accents

Select items (form) and create movement throughout the composition (think about shadows also)

Design kids- fruit, white items, shadows, silhouetted people?

• Medium-straight photography or graphite pencils/eraser

Breadth #6 Figure/Ground-Space

•Positive/negative main focus

•Subject-chairs

•Medium-straight photography or pencil (sketch) with ink (solid black and white areas)

Breadth #7  Texture

•Texture-the surface character of a material that can be experienced through touch or the illusion of touch.

•Choices

•Actual-the real thing, the way the surface looks and feels

•Simulated-a surface character that looks real but in fact is not

•Abstract-usually displays some hint of the original texture but has been modified to suit the artist’s particular needs

•Invented-purely the creation of the artist’s imagination

•Medium-photos of real textures, drawings from observation of texture, construction of   textural surfaces

Breadth #3  Scale not Proportion

              •Technique-Photo montage or straight photography

scale: size relative to human dimensions or another standard unit of measure. Example: Statue of Liberty’s scale is apparent when she is seen next to an automobile.

proportion: the comparative size relationship between the parts of a whole  Example: the size of the Statue of Liberty’s hand relates to the size of her head

montage: French verb monter, “to put together”/flourished early in the 20th century/made up of cutting up and then reassembling photographic negatives or prints from various sources (either scavenged or newly made).

              • Medium- illustration/mat board either 8 x 10, 9 x 12, 11 x 14

                                art paste, brush

                                   xacto knife/scissors

  1. Discuss scale/proportion
  2. Peruse resource materials for examples of scale/proportion
    1. McMillan resources
    2. Textbook “Art Fundamentals” pp 29, 61-63, 182 (under “Size”)
    3. “Launching the Imagination” pp 321-232
  3. Using photo montage technique, create a unified image expressing scale

Breadth #4  Emphasis/dominance

              •Technique-Collage or straight photography

dominance: certain elements are more important than others/some features are emphasized and others are subordinated

emphasis: gives prominence to part of a design. Emphasis and focal point are used to attract attention and increase visual and conceptual impact.

collage: combination of a variety of materials to create a unified composition

              •Medium- illustration/mat board either 8 x 10, 9 x 12, 11 x 14

                                art paste, brush, glue, tape

                                xacto knife/scissors

                               variety of materials

(paper, fabric, natural objects, photos, any drawing/painting mediums can      also be added for enhancement)
  1. Discuss emphasis/dominance
  2. Peruse resource materials for examples of emphasis/dominance

McMillan resources

Textbook “Art Fundamentals” pp 62 & 512, 103, 137

“Launching the Imagination” pp 96-98, 233-235

Week 1

  1. Register at AP Central
  2. Peruse/study student samples (breadth, quality, concentration)
  3. Discuss concentration area with Mrs. McMillan
  4. Create one large portfolio using 2 sheets of posterboard
  5. Create 16 smaller portfolios for each breadth assignment
  • line
  • shape
  •  form
  • texture
  •  value
  •  color,
  • balance
  • scale/proportion
  •  contrast
  •  rhythm
  •  pattern
  •  movement
  •  emphasis
  •  space(figure/ground)
  •  unity/variety
  •  repetition
  1. If you have examples to fit the categories above, place them in the appropriate portfolios.

Week 2

Breadth #1-•Shape/repetition/variety/unity

              • Subject-bottles

              • Color scheme (p154 “Art Fundamentals”)

                           • tetrad            • split complementary

• Medium-watercolor,tempera, colored pencil, frisket

  1. Study the formal relationship designs (Mary Stewart)
  2. Select one design to use as a basis for your work
  3. On 12 x 18 watercolor paper, simulate design by masking areas with tape, drawing with white crayon, or masking with frisket.  Paint over areas in “stages”.  Allow to dry between colors if necessary (to avoid creating “muddy” color)
  4. Study images on pages 32 and 33 being aware of repetition of shape, variety, unity.
  5. SKETCH several (5-7) bottles from observation. Vary the angle and size.  Keep it loose!
  6. Cut out bottles and arrange on watercolor/painted paper.  Cut several of the same size and angle if necessary.  Create more bottles if it is needed to create a unified design.
  7. Draw lightly around bottles and paint.  Be aware of translucency, color, variation of tints, shades, value.
  8. Allow to dry.  Add additional details with lines (use pencil, marker, thin paintbrush).

Week 3

Breadth #2-Space/emotional color

•Subject-Figure foreshortened sitting in a “space”

(sitting with feet up, pointing, kicking, leaning, etc)

•Medium-12 x 18 folded black paper, white pencil, artstix or oil pastels

12 x 18  crumpled brown paper, black glue, oil pastels

•Color-select color scheme that coordinates with mood

  1. Peruse all resource materials (bookmarked examples in print form and www.incredibleart.org)
  2. Decide on pose of figure
  3. Decide on background/accentuate feeling of deep space
  4. Shoot photos or draw images on separate paper
  5. Superimpose images to create composition
  6. Create images on both black paper and crumpled brown paper
  7. Render image being aware of emotional color of work
