Week One

8/20-8/22

No school on Monday or Tuesday this week due to Tropical Storm Fay!

Day One: Students are advised to wear their I.D. badges at all times and that they may purchase a new one, if necessary, during lunch or in the morning.

Begin reading short story entitled: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Pg. 20-29. Complete the during and after reading activities in the Interactive Reader Workbook. Complete the 'Harrison Bergeron' Active Reading Skillbuilder: (Making Inferences). You can find instructions for this assignment at the bottom of page 20 and in the Interactive Reader Workbook. Complete the Literary Analysis Skillbuilder: (Theme)

*Students will receive notes on the F.R.I.E.S. facts, reasons, illustrations, examples and statistics.

Classwork/Homework-continue writing started in class and use the FRIES as an elaboration technique; include as many as possible. Due tomorrow!

Day Two:

Students will be given an activation code for books on line (www.classzone.com/eservices) and advised to sign up by tomorrow.

Complete the Words to Know Skillbuilder parts A-C
 
Day Three:
1.) Grammar Skills activity: Proper Nouns.
Turn in all Active reading & Lit. Analysis skillbuilders & Grammar today.
Part C of the Words-to-Know skillbuilder is the first writing composition sample of the year.

*All students were given a syllabus today to have signed by parents and returned by Monday, August 25th.

Day One: Each student will receive a folder.

Begin a V.I.S. for words to know in literature textbook

Day Two:

*Students will receive notes on the F.R.I.E.S. facts, reasons, illustrations, examples and statistics.

Classwork/Homework-Begin writing practices in class using the FRIES as an elaboration technique; include as many as possible.

Day Three:

Test on Harrison Bergeron!

Discuss: Figurative Language and Sound Devices and Showing, Not Telling.

Day Four:

Classwork: Complete Proper Nouns Grammar Skillbuilder worksheet.

 

Week three

9/1-9/5

No School on Monday due to holiday!

Day One: Begin reading "Once More to the Lake" by E.B. White

Day Two: Descriptive Writing/Show, Don't Tell! All students Practice in class and type final copy for homework.

Day Three: Complete a V.I.S. for the Words to Know associated with the short story. Class Discussion/Making a Connection with the short story read yesterday.
Day Four:
Day Five: Notetaking: Students will take notes today on 1.) Context Clues...Definition and Overview/Idioms/Figurative Language 2.) Poetry...Sound devices/Imagery
 

Week Four

9/8-9/12

Day One: Diagnostic test on grammar skills. Complete Grammar in Context (Active & Passive Voice) exercise 1-5 on p. 123 in Language of Literature textbooks. Refer to pgs. 534-535 for additional help with Active/Passive Voice. This is due by the end of class.

Day Two:Complete Writing Profile Center Worsheet/Begin remediation of grammar skills

Day Three: Begin reading "The Son from America" by Singer
Day Four: Students will receive writing folders.

Day Five: complete Grammar and Literary Analysis Skillbuilders for "The Son from America" by Singer

Continue work started with the writing profile center w.s.

Day One: Data Day!! Student & Teacher will discuss goals and expectations leading to graduation.

Begin reading novella entitled Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Students are expected to read 1 chapter each day. Follow the study guide for each chapter as you will be held responsible for knowing the material. All reading and study guides should be completed by Monday 2/19.

Veteran's Day!

Day One:All work (reading of novel, notes chart, study questions) should be completed today. Begin reading, 'The Pit and the Pendulum' by Edgar Allan Poe beginning at page 559 in Language of Literature textbook. Work through the story in Interactive Reader beginning at page 184.  Reading and interactive reader should be completed by the start of class on Wednesday. Refer to day three of this week for upcoming writing assignment and begin thinking about what you may want to write.

Day Two:No School!
Day Three:The Pit...Pendulum work is due today! Writing Option #2 page 576 in Language of Literature textbook. Students will write a Poe Parody or comic imitation, of Poe based upon the story. For example, students may create a narrator who is "tortured" by the process of waking up on a school day. Try and imitate Poe's style. Due Thursday by the end of class.
Day Four: Continue Writing Option #2 (Poe Parody or comic imitation, of Poe based upon the story page 576 in Language of Literature textbook). Check your work to make sure you have imitated Poe's style. Work should be typed and turned in by the end of class today.
Day Five: Complete Vocabulary in Action exercises A and B page 576 in Language of Literature textbook. Complete Grammar in Context appositive phrases page 577 (1-4) in Language of Literature textbook. Complete Exercise 3 Identifying Appositives (1-5) page 446 in Writing and Grammar textbook. Day Four: How to write a Character Sketch.
Day Five:Discuss expectations and set dates for scrapbook project and poem assignment. Review the noun clauses exercise with the class. Complete remediation exercise on noun clauses pg 478 exercise 40. Scrapbook due date is TBA. The inspiration for the poem must come from the story A Separate Peace by John Knowles.

Winter Break Begins!

Take a test on the sonnet!Email me your answers as an attachment and I'll let you know your results in class. This is a great way to determine how well you understand the sonnets.
Sonnet (final copy) is due on Tuesday December 18th. Make sure it is typed, you have read pages 225-227, and followed the guidelines on pages 233-236.
