WEEK 1 - AUGUST 18 - 22, 2008.

INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS: Strategies of good readers versus poor readers

WEDNESDAY - THURSDAY :

Welcome students, overview of school and classroom policies, fire drill procedures, review of reading strategies.

Review of class procedures, students will discuss in pairs and smallcooperative learning groups what they know of effective reading strategies and practice with narrative and expository text.

FRIDAY - Review reading log assignments and procedures.

****HOMEWORK***

Students will read either a piece of narrative or expository text of their choice and describe in a journal what strategies they used to understand the text, and why it worked effectively.

WEEK 2 - AUGUST 25 - 29, 2008

WEDNESDAY - Review vocabulary words from Edge Unit 1 -

THURSDAY : Grade 9 FCAT Benchmark Overview

FRIDAY - Review reading log assignments and procedures / Begin reading a short story "The Moustache". Edge Textbook (ETB), Pgs 11-24.

Context Clues, prefixes, suffixes, figurative language/ idiomatic expressions

Whole/Small Group Rotation Assignments

Group 1: Students will locate as many words as they can in in the text that have either a prefix or suffix attachment.

Group 2: Students will locate as many phrases as possible that are written in figurative language.

Group 3: Students will read the poem "Grandmother" and compare and contrast with the Grandmother in "The Moustache".

FRIDAY - Students will complete assignments and participate in group presentations.

WEEK 4 - SEPTEMBER 8-12, 2008

Instructional Focus:

Review features of expository text (news feature), review unlocking vocabulary strategies - prefix/suffix/context clues, introduce compare/contrast overview (time allowing).

MONDAY - Visit to Media Center for Introductory Book Checkout / Review Reading Log Assignments / Group Rotations.

TUESDAY - THURSDAY: Group rotation assignments.

Group1 withTeacher- Read article "Who We Really Are" ETB pg 27 - 30 and complete after reading assignment.

Group 2 - Poem - Grandmother. Students will first read the poem, build a profile picture of the main character, compare/contrast the grandmother of the poem to the one from the short story - "The Moustache".

Group 3 - Analyze Setting of a story. Students will be asked to think and write about how the plot of the story may change if the setting were different.

Data Chat, Analyzing and Synthesizing Information, Main Idea/Supporting Details Overview

MONDAY & - Students will participate in one to one conferences with the teacher to review FCAT scores and set personal academic goals. While in conference, the rest of the class will be engaged in critical thinking writing activities based on previous readings from the textbook.

TUESDAY - Complete Data Chats. Introduce new vocabulary words to next story, complete a main idea, supporting details graphic organizer on the writer and her experiences.

WEDNESDAY - THURSDAY - Author's Purpose. Students will review the different types of author's purpose. Students will then be put in groups to create posters of the different types.

FRIDAY - Vocabulary Workshop - Lessons #1 + 2. Students will read the passages and complete vocabulary questions.

1) Students will first try to find definitions based on context clues then will use a dictionary to confirm definitions.

2) Students will create essential questions based on the article.
