# 2 HTML Handout from folder

For better understanding: Review the video on HTML Basics.

We will be going over the previous assignment. There are some corrections that need to be made. Then we will go over the Kuler website to see how you may choose colors to go together with your web design. We will be starting handout #2 HTML from the folder you downloaded yesterday.

For better understanding, view the video on HTML Basics from the folder you downloaded yesterday. It is a 16 minute video, but being able to see it as it is done and listening to a different instructor will help with reinforcing the information.

Friday

1/27/11

Continue working through the handouts. Exercises.

Review of 1st assignment: If anyone still has not completed it with the proper image and links functioning, please let me know. Be sure to put the whole folder in the drop box with your name on it.

As we work through the handout on HTML basics, be sure to constantly check the process in the browser. Firefox seems to work better.  Also, remember the video tutorial that is also available from the folder you downloaded from the Out Box.

Review: So, we have discovered some errors in the coding from the first handout. Within your folder that you create for each project, do not use an images folder. This was my fault as well, I was using the techniques taught with Dreamweaver, not HTML.

Advanced Website Exercise

(300 pts)

Download the "Advanced" pdf from the Out Box. It is located in the Web Design Mastery Folder. This exercise is mostly about images and knowing how to size them, resize them, and use them within the confines of web sites. There are plenty of sites out there that will allow you to download pre-designed images to use on web pages. Starting with page 6.

  • 1 single page, not multiple pages.
  • Create a new folder to put everything for this site into it. Name it: 3LastName_Advancedsite
  • You will need to find images similar to the ones shown in the example. You may NOT use the images from the example for the main sections, however you may use the navigational images (located in the Out Box Web Design Mastery Folder)
  • You will need to use an application for resizing and sizing images you choose. On the Mac you have Photoshop or Preview. Both will allow you to set sizes. Image size does matter.
  • You will need to name the images accordingly to match the names in the example code, or match the example code to the images.
  • You can use the code from the example, be sure to change the quotes. You will be building this page throughout the handout so please work through it for accuracy. An example of what the page will look similar to is on page 6. Again, do not use images from this page, find or create your own.
  • Links should have actual names but they do not have to go to actural sites.
  • Columns and headings should have real names.
  • You may change the title of the site to anything you like. Example: Yourname Consulting Company
  • You will be filling in the paragraph text with information about your company.
  • Check you site for validation and accessibilty (25% of grade) see information on Thursday.

Objectives:

  • 3.2 Use of Insert bar
  • 3.3 Use of Property Inspector
  • 3.4 Use of Assets panel
  • 3.5 Use of Files panel
  • 4.0 Adding Content

Check the Advanced Web site's validation and accessibility.

See requirements above...

Be sure to Validate your site and check the accessibility of it.

Validate your website: http://validator.w3.org/

(-10 pts for each unchecked error)

Validate your pages. Dreamweaver includes a tool that lets you compare your
Web pages against agreed-upon standards for HTML and other Web languages. It
checks to make sure your pages are valid (that they conform to these standards).
Valid pages are more likely to work in a predictable way on all Web browsers.
And if you envision your site on mobile devices such as cellphones and palmtops,
valid pages are again a better bet. In fact, you can even validate your Web pages to
see if they conform to Wireless Markup Language (WML)—a tag-based language
like HTML used for creating content for mobile phone Web browsers.

(page 608; Dreamweaver CS3: the Missing Manual)

Check your website's accessibility: http://wave.webaim.org/

(-10 pts for each Missing Alt text and/or empty links)

Check for accessibility. Not everyone experiences the Web in the same way. People
with poor vision, for example, will miss out on the beautiful, full-color banner
and navigation buttons you’ve created. To help you build Web sites that don’t
shut out people with disabilities, Dreamweaver can check your Web site to make
sure it conforms to Section 508 (a Federal regulation mandating that Web sites
built by or for the Federal Government are accessible to those with disabilities).

(page 608; Dreamweaver CS3: the Missing Manual)

Continue working on your Travel Website.

For those who have completed the Travel site you may wish to review sections from the book, Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual, which contains information to help you pass the Adobe Certified Associate's Dreamweaver exam.

Dreamweaver Objective Correlation to the book.

To see the correlation between the book and the objectives; open the pdf document above and see page #2. This document was provided by E. Marshall, who is an instructor in the Portland Adult Ed system as a syllabus for a Dreamweaver course.

Virtual Resume with a Wordpress.com blog

Wordpress help on Atomic Learning Click Here!

Welcome to "You Web 2.0". This is where technology meets the needs of those looking to promote themselves to the outside world, whether it is for your post-secondary education or for possible career options you may pursue after high school.

Using Wordpress.com, you will create an online virtual resume for yourself. If you already have a wordpress blog, create a new one for this assignment. The tricky thing about this is that, by default, WordPress publishes blog articles to the front page of the site. In order to implement my strategy, it’s important to change that. You can do this on the Reading Settings page by selecting “Home” for your front page and “Experience” as the posts page.

The pages will include:

  • Home - This is a wordpress blog page about you so name it appropriately. For the time being, you may use just your first or last name in the blog name because this is a live page. You will need a head shot of yourself. You may bring one in, or use the computer or camera.
  • Your headshot. You may bring in one from home... It should look professional!
  • About Me
    • Work History
    • Skills
    • Volunteerism
    • Experience
  • Social Networks; other web services you my have accounts with...
  • Contact Me (Until you graduate, use only your first name and do not put in your actual phone number, address, email, or other contact info since this is a live page.)

Wordpress.com is a free blog that is more than capable of meeting your needs as a Virtual Resume. You will have to create a login and name the blog appropriately. Atomic Learning Tutorial direct links are accessible at the bottom of this page.

Use a clean, professional looking theme for your virtual resume.

Add the following:

* Add to Any Sharing and Subscribing buttons: Makes it easy for visitors to share, save, bookmark, and/or subscribe to your site.
* All in One SEO Pack : Provides a bunch of handy tools to make your site more search engine friendly.
* Contact Form 7 : Create customized forms for visitors to send you messages.
* Exclude Pages from Navigation : Allows you to easily build landing pages.
* FeedBurner FeedSmith : Synchs your blog with FeedBurner.
* Google Analyticator : Installs the Google Analytics script on your site so you can track traffic.
* Google XML Sitemaps : Creates the XML site map files that makes it easier for Google to discover pages on your site.
* Simple Tags : Makes it really easy to manage the tags that you’ll use to mark your areas of expertise.
* SlideShare : Allows you to embed SlideShare presentations.
* Social Links : Display buttons with links to your social networking sites in the sidebar.
* WordPress Database Backup : Ounce of prevention, and all that…
* WP-Mail-SMTP : Reconfigures the wp_mail() function to use SMTP instead of mail().

Pass the ACA Dreamweaver CS4/CS5 test this term.

Option 1:

Download the Dreamweaver CS4 PDF from the Out Box; Web Design Class to Dreamweaver Resources and drag the folder for Dreamweaver CS4 PDF to the desktop and then to the documents folder on the computer. You will be working through each of the chapters and will need to show your site at the end of each chapter assignment for grade. Option 2:

PASS the Adobe Certified Associate test for Dreamweaver CS4/5 this term and you will receive credit for all of the assignments and the final exam. You must pass the ACA test in order to receive this option, otherwise you will still be responsible for all the assignments between now and the end of the term, including the final exam.
