Flash Blinking Head Project

Review section G from the Atomic Learning website. These tutorials are necessary to help you learn the basics of Flash. They are essential and they make it so you DON'T have to read the instructions from a book...

ReDraw Project: You will need to find a graphic or image on the internet. It works best with an image that has no background.

Review the tutorials from the Atomic Learning Website as needed.

Assignment 1: Basic Motion Tween Exercise (100 pts)

Assignment 2: Non-linear Motion Tween Exercise (100 pts.)

1/17

1. Basic motion tweening:

shows basic movement of objects. It is basic linear movement.

Select a background and two objects to show the movement. GIF images work best for the objects.

Step 3 is very important.
After you have imported the object, you will need to erase any background not needed so you will need to Modify>Break Apart the object prior to erasing.

Then you will need to modify the object so it is a symbol. Modify>Create Symbol (Movie symbol)

________________________________________________________

2. Non-linear motion tween:

Non-linear motion means it does not travel in a straight line. Today's lesson shows one of the ways non-linear motion is achieved. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and follow them as directed.

You will be using 3 objects and a background. You may use the same object more than once.

Assignment 1: Review Assignment: Create a Flash Motion Tween using both a linear object and a non-linear object. See instructions to the right. (100 pts)

Assignment 2: Combining Motion Effects (100 pts) See instructions to the right.

1/18

1. For the review assignment, you will need a background and 2 objects. Create motion tweens with both objects, one having a linear motion and the other a non-linear motion. You may use the assignment from yesterday and just add a linear motion tween.

__________________________________________________________

2. It is important that you are able to grasp the concepts of motion. You should be able to do the simplest motion effects on your own. You will use these effects over and over in upcoming projects.

  1. This lesson is going to combine the different motion effects. You will need to use the Blinking Head from the previous lessons and both the linear and non-linear motion tweens.
  2. Create a new file.
  3. Add a background and lock it.
  4. Add a Blinking Head like the one on the lesson of 1/23. You do not have to go into as much detail, just make the eyes blink.
  5. Make the Blinking Head a Movie Symbol.
  6. Copy and paste it onto 2 different layers. 1 layer is for linear motion and the other layer is for non-linear motion.
  7. On one layer make the Blinking Head object move in a linear motion. Lock the layer.
  8. On the second layer make the Blinking Head move in a non-linear motion.
  9. Save the file. Export the Movie file using your initials or name and then place in the dropbox.

Make-up day - work on any outstanding programs you have not yet turned in.

1/19

One of the advantages of taking a class like this is so you get used to being guided into and through your assignments instead of having me "spoon feed" you the steps. Being able to read and follow directions is a crucial step in learning in the post-secondary (high school) arena, whether you go to a college/university or right into the workforce. All the information is provided, all you need to do is learn how to use the resources more effectively.

Prior to trying today's assignments, view the following tutorials on the broward.atomiclearning.com website

All assignments are on the same page, just scroll down the page. After you complete the basic effects, you will need to repeat them using a graphic of your choice.

This is to help with your understanding of Flash Tween processes and practice using those processes.

Due to technical difficulties with the assignments, today will be your make-up day to work on the ones you may be missing.

I will be going over them to find the errors I made with the instructions because of the Flash version change from the last time this class ran.

Your assignment for today is to go to the Atomic Learning web site and review the section E. on Layers and the Timeline. Also, go through section F. on Sybols, Library, and Behaviors.

1/24

I am in the process of reviewing the assignments to find and fix problems with the instructions. Do what you can and save the programs, and after reviewing the problems I will post a fix so you may complete them properly. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Go through the tutorials assigned from the Atomic Learning web site.

Create a Jumping Stick Figure (100 pts)

2/13

Review the video tutorials on the Atomic Learning Website; Macintosh Tutorials, Flash MX 2004 (now listed under Adobe), Section C: Basic Tools. These short video tutorials will show you how to use the basic drawing tools you will need for future projects.

Go to the server resources on monxserve01 in the folder, Digital Design Flash Animations Lesson Examples and view lesson 02 - DrawingYour Character with Flash MX. This tutorial shows you how to use several of the tools available to draw or trace the character you choose. This is a beginning step to creating, drawing and animating a character you will choose for a future project.

Create a Jumping Stick Figure using the steps (instructions) from the Basic Walking Man assignment of 2/14/06. The Stick Figure will need to bend it's knees and jump up into the air and land. Be sure to follow the steps from the Basic Walking Man and get used to creating animation using this technique.

When you return to the main stage of your Flash assignment, add a background (draw it or import it) your final project should have your jumping Stick Figure jumping up and down on the screen with a background. Save the file, export the file as a movie and put into the Digital Design Drop Box.

Zoom Onto Stage Effect (100 pts)

Character Zoom on to Stage Effect (100 pts) See instructions to the right.

Basic Walking Man (100 pts)

2/14

Do the procedure for zooming a picture or object onto the stage. You will also learn how to slant a picture or object by using the free transform tool and holding the alt key. Read and follow the directions as on the instructions. Be sure to give yourself enough space on the stage and to the left of the stage.

Hints:

1. When slanting the object, be sure the cursor looks like a double arrow and hold the alt key so the bottom of the image does not slant in the other direction.

2.  On the timeline, be sure to use KEYFRAMES as instructed and then go back an do the Create Motion Tweens in the correct frames.

Character Zoom onto Stage Instructions:

Using the technique from the first assignment today, Zoom Onto Stage Effect; find a character or cartoon and re-create the effect. Save the file, export the movie and put into the dropbox.

You will need:

1. Cartoon character or an image with no background attached. To modify, break apart, erase or delete what is not needed and then convert to symbol.

2. A background for the character or object to run into. Picture the Road runner running onto the stage and stopping... Be sure to lock the background.

Read and follow the directions to create an animation of a basic walking motion.

Adding sound effects to Flash Animations

Today's assignments will have you adding basic sound effects to your flash animations. You will need to get sound effects from the internet and you may use the website I found, just click on the link to the right or from the instructions. Download several effects to go with the weight dropping, the bang, spring, walking, and one of the other simple animations you did in previous lessons.

You will need to choose 5 of the simple animations and add sound to each of them. Since the instructions asked you to save the Flash files as well as exporting them, this should be a simple process of importing the sounds, adding a layer and then re-exporting the Flash Movies.

Free Downloadable Sound Effects website.

2/21

Go to the server resources on monxserve01 in the folder, Digital Design Flash Animations Lesson Examples and view lesson 10 - Implementing a Walking Cycle part II. You can use this technique with Assignment 2 today. Start practicing the techniques shown in this tutorial.

Using one of the moving backgrounds you completed in the previous lesson, add a moving object going in the opposite direction. It should look like you have a scrolling background.

Create an animation using a walking figure, a moving background, and at least 3 sound effects. (300 pts)

Re-create the animation from the following link. Add sound effects. (100 pts) click here

2/22

Create an animation using a walking figure, a moving background, and at least 3 sound effects. You may use a stick figure, but remember you do have the walking guy (thin and fat). You also have a moving background, so all you have to do next is add at least 3 sound effects. Be sure to add sound effects on their own layers.

Re-create the animation from the link. Add sound effects to the animation. Export the animated movie and put it in the dropbox.

Moving or Alternating Backgrounds (300 pts)
2/23

Create a flash movie that has at least 3 different backgrounds. You can use the cityscape you created in an earlier project and change it a little to show a change in scenery as the backgounds switch. Set each background for  24 frames per background (total is 72 if you use 3 backgrounds). This should have the movie lasting about 6 seconds.

  • Add the Walking guy (fat or thin, no stick figure). Opposite direction of the background movement.
  • Have the walking guy walk in place, in the middle of the scene.
  • At the end, have the walking guy walk off the stage.
  • Add a plane flying over and have it go in the direction of the backgounds changing.
  • Add music for the background and have it play throughout the movie.
  • Add a sound effect for the plane.

Export the movie. Save the file, and place the exported movie in the dropbox. This is due Tomorrow. Make it good.

Butterfly Effect (200 pts)

Start thinking of  a way to use this procedure on an animation of your own. You might think of using a bird or an animated person trying to fly... You will use this for an assignment for Friday. Start finding the objects you will need for Friday's assignment.

Read the Cheating Policy in red to the right.

3/1

This assignment is to show how to animate using several objects. In this case it is a butterfly. Do the best you can. Try not to move the objects around once you start the animation parts.

Start thinking of  a way to use this procedure on an animation of your own. You might think of using a bird or an animated person trying to fly... You will use this for an assignment for Friday. Start finding the objects you will need for Friday's assignment.

Very Important Note:

It is always unfortunate that I must bring up the subject of cheating, however, because there has already been incidents of using other students' work and presenting it as their own, I am forced to review the policy. For the first offense, you will get a freebee, that is, BOTH YOU AND THE PERSON WHO SHARED THEIR WORK WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. The second offense will get you a referral to your administrator and request for a conference with the parents of BOTH or ALL involved in the cheating.

This is an elective, if you don't want to be in the class, maybe we can find an alternative, otherwise, do your own work.

3/2

Using the animation technique from the Butterfly Effect create an animated character, animal or insect (not a butterfly). Find an animal, character or insect that you can disect into at least 3 parts; body and two appendages (arms, legs, ears, wings, antenna, etc.) Make the appendages flap like you did in the Butterfly Effect. You may want to open the Butterfly Effect instructions and modify them for the object you have chosen. Save when done and export to a flash movie. Put the final project in the drop box.

Hints:

1. Your objects need to be Broken Apart (Modify), before erasing or adjusting the object.

2. When done modifying the object, make it a symbol again.

4. The X and Y coordinates on the Butterfly Effect may not be the same for this animation, don't be afraid to adjust.

Complete butterfly and other flying object from the previous assignments. 3/5
Preparation and planning phase of term end project. 3/6

The term end project will also be your final exam and will be due on the final exam date. The basic concept is something you have done before. You will need to create a cityscape, a walking person, music and/or sound effects.

Starting parameters:

1. Create at least 3 cityscape scenes that go together. Your background will at times be scrolling and at other times be stationary, but there must be at least 3 different versions.

2. The walking person; cannot be a stick person (remember tracing?). The person must NOT be transparent, give them clothing, skin color, hair, arms, legs, etc. The arms, legs and head will probably be separate to help with movement OR you can create several versions of the person; 1 walking, 1 standing, 1 with a head turn, etc.

3. You will need to choose music and you may also want a few sound effects.

4. It will need to be at least 2 minutes long. Remember how to calculate the time vs. the number of frames? How many frames per second and how many frames per minute?

With these in mind, you should start coming up with an idea of the walking person project.

3
Work on putting together the backgrounds. 3/7 Remember, this project must be at least 2 minutes long. You should start to put together the backgrounds and extend them to 2  minutes. 12 frames per second times 120 seconds. On your backgrounds to give an illusion of depth, you can have the cityscape in the distance and maybe add a fence, a sidewalk, and a street (up close). This creates a visual separation between the city and the path the walker will take. It will help to make the walker  seem to be a normal scale to the background.

Reminder: This counts as part of your grade in the class and as the final exam project, so 600 points are at stake.

Continue working on your backgrounds to make them smooth through transitions. Refer back to the exercise on backgrounds if you need more help. You may wish to add the music as well so you can see if you like it with the movie.

3/8

Continue working on your final project. Reminder: it is worth 300 points toward you final grade and it is you final exam.

Last chance to turn in anything for grades for this term.

3/9 You might want to work on the walker in a separate file or at least work on him as a separate object.
Preparation for final exam. Continue working on the final exam  project. You should be adding the walker. 3/12 Note: if you are falling short of your two minutes, you can copy your frames and paste them at the end to extend the final product. Also, your backgrounds may be extended as well.
