Mr. Pierre Carmel Monarch High School Pierre.carmel@browardschools.com 754-322-1400 Calculus Syllabus and Student Contract Year Round Course
Calculus AB (AP)
Curriculum: AP Calculus AB is a course designed to offer students college level mathematics under the guidelines of the Advanced Placement Program. Topics shall include elementary functions, limits, hyperbolic functions, limits and continuity, derivatives, antiderivatives, definite integrals, indeterminate forms, and applications of the integral. Students must take the Advanced Placement Examination offered by the College Board. Procedures and Routines: When you enter the class, take out your homework and be prepared to take notes. In order to be successful in an AP class it is necessary to take notes and do homework every day. Although, it would be almost impossible to check for notes and homework every day, I can however give several quizzes. Quizzes will be given approximately twice a week and not all of them will be announced. When you enter the class, take out your homework and be prepared to take notes. Class Rules:
Consequences: When a rule is not followed, the students know the following is the general progression of consequences:
Class supplies:
Grading Scales: 90 - 100 A 70 - 76 C 87 - 89 B+ 67 - 69 D+ 80 - 86 B 60 - 66 D 77 - 79 C+ 0 - 59 F Class grades are based on: 40% - Tests 40% - Quizzes 20% - Notebook and Class Participation Tardies: Attendance is taken as soon as class starts. You are expected to be in your seat before the bell rings. Excessive tardies will result in detentions. Missed work/quizzes/tests: All students are responsible for making up any missed work. All make-up work must be completed within two days of absence; if not a grade of zero will be given. Students are not permitted to turn in missing work (zero grades) at the end of the quarter (don’t procrastinate). All work can be found on my teacher webpage. Quizzes and exams will be given after certain concepts are reviewed. If the student is absent the day of the test, he/she should be prepared to take the test on the day of their return to school. Course Difficulty: The AP Calculus course and the AP Calculus test is very challenging and rigorous. It is expected for any AP course; a student should study 90 minutes for every 90 minutes of class time. The students in this class will be expected to work extra hard to keep up with the demanding work that is required of them. I will be staying after schools on most Wednesdays for any students that may require extra help. Practice Tests: In order for students to get practice taking the AP test, I will be giving extra practice tests starting approximately four weeks before the AP exam is given. Textbook: Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards – Calculus of a Single Variable Since we do not have enough textbooks for a class set, students will have to bring the textbooks back and forth to school. COURSE CONTENT: This class is designed to emphasize critical thinking and mathematical techniques used in standardized testing like the FCAT. Topics shall include, but not limited to: Number Sense, Concepts and Operations; Measurements; Geometry and Spatial Sense; Algebraic Thinking; and Data Analysis and Probability. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS/RULES: As Monarch Knights, you will be expected to do the right things for the right reasons at the right times.
Consequences: When a rule is not followed, the students know the following is the general progression of consequences*: Student/Teacher conference Parent phone call & detention Referral *Depending on the severity of the action, some steps may be skipped. PORTFOLIO PREPARATION POLICY: Each day we will expand our portfolio’s based on the Sunshine State Standards which are the basis of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Most days there will be a warm up, notes, and classwork/homework. Each day’s paper should include all of these sections and be clearly and neatly displayed.
GRADING POLICY: Tests 35% Quizzes 35% Notebook/Class Participation 30%
