Project 1-

"Eye x 25 "

For this project, you will be using the same

"eye" image to create 25 (yes, 25!) variations of the eye.  By working through these exercises, you will be learning techniques that can be used later on and you will become more familiar with what you can do with Photoshop.

You should save all of the images into a folder titled "yourname.eye folder"

As you work through the lessons, which are pretty easy, label the image as "001" "002" and so on.

Pop Art is a 20th century art movement that utilized the imagery and techniques of consumerism and popular culture. Pop art developed in the late1950's as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and flourished in the sixties and early seventies. Pop Art favored figural imagery and the reproduction of everyday objects, such as Campbell Soup cans, comic strips and advertisements.

Project 5 -

Pointillism

This one is pretty easy - you'll be creating 3 pointillist images in the style of Georges Seurat.

The first image will be a directed image.  The other two will be created using one of your city and landscape images.

It is important to remember that pointillist images are subtle in color.

Pointillism is a form of painting in which tiny dots of primary-colors are used to generate secondary colors. It is an offshoot of Impressionism, and is usually categorized as a form of Post-Impressionism.

Post-Impressionism is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took their art in other directions.

Project 6-

Post Impressionist
Van Gogh style

One of the most famous painters of the Post-Impressionist era.  His style is unique and very recognizable - characterized by swirls of color.

For this assignment, you will be creating two images that emulate the work of Vincent Van Gogh.

The first image will be directed, using the images below.  You will create the second image using one of your flower images (not the close-up image) OR a portrait of a person (a head-shot)

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch draughtsman and painter, classified as a Post-Impressionist. His paintings and drawings include some of the world's best known and most popular pieces.
The fact that he cut off his ear is very well known, as is the belief that he was driven to an early suicide by lack of recognition of his genius.

Project 7 -

Fauvist Style Painting

Fauvism grew out of Pointillism and Post-Impressionism, but is characterized by a more primitive and less naturalistic form of expression.

For this assignment, you will create two images that are in the Fauvist style.

The first image will be a directed image, using one of the images below.  The second image will be one of your choice.

"Joiners" -

a Photo Collage Technique

Between 1982 and 1987, artist David Hockney experimented heavily with photo collage, creating works he called joiners. A joiner consists of a series of photographs taken from different viewpoints, arranged (overlapping) to form a single piece.

You will be creating three digital “joiners” by using Photoshop techniques to emulate the work of David Hockney.

Digital Mandala

A Mandala is a circular image that includes symbols that relate to you and your being.

Digitally Designed Pinwheel

As you know, Sept. 21st is International Day of Peace.  We celebrate this day of non-violence with Pinwheels for Peace.

You will be creating a digitally designed pinwheel that will be printed and assembled for Sept. 21st.

For this assignment, you will basically follow the directions for the mandala, however, you can use whatever filter you wish (you don't have to use the stamp) and you don't have to fill in areas with the paint bucket.

Be creative!  come up with a good design that illustrates your ideas about peace.

Project 12

Sgt. Pepper image

You need to get started on this assignment because it may take a while.

You are going to emulate the artwork on the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band" album cover.

Part 1

The first thing you are going to do is decide on a theme.  Choose something that you are really into - i.e. music, art, football, cartoons, baseball, etc.  It should be a topic that includes a lot of people (not objects).

You will need to find 64, yes 64, people related to your topic - people that are important to your topic.  You will need to search and find 64 images of these people.

Try to find full length figures that are not too small (because they will become pixellated when you put them into your image).

First collect the images, then delete the backgrounds so that all you have is the person - no background.

Save these in a folder.

Part 2 - directions

While you are collecting these images of people, make a list of the names of these people and write a sentence as to why they are important to your topic.

Don't just forget about this part of the assignment....

For the Sgt. Pepper album, open the document below to see the names of the 80+ people in the image.

Project 13 -

Patterns

For this assignment, you will be creating two designs using pattern.  The first design will be created following specific directions.

directions

For the second design, you will use your name to create a design.  This design will be repeated, rotated and flipped to create a pattern.

directions

Pattern

Pattern is the repetition of shape or form. It can also reflect the underlying structure of a design by organizing the surfaces or objects in the composition

One artist who used pattern in his paintings was Frank Stella.

Project 14

Abstraction

For the first part of this assignment, you will zero in on a flower and in the process, you will abstract the image, much in the style of Georgia O'Keefe.  For the first image, you will use one of the flowers provided.

Project 15

Express Yourself

In this project, you will be dealing with value, which is an element of art.

Before you start working on your self-portrait, you will have to do several things:

  1. Using Microsoft Word, create a list of 10 words that describe you (i.e. funny, loyal, honest, etc.).  Label this list "describe".
  2. Skip down a few lines in your Word document and create a list of 15 or more people who are important in your life.  Label this list "family and friends."
  3. Skip down a few lines and create a list of 20 things that you like (i.e. pizza, going to the movies, etc.).  Label this list "likes."
  4. Skip down a few lines and create a list of at least 4 quotes that you would live by.  Search and get good quotes. Label this list "quotes."

Save the list as yourname.list.doc and put it in the teacher drop box.

Eye x 100 Part 2

For this project, you will be using the same "eye" image to create 16 new variations of the eye.

By working through these exercises, you will be learning techniques that can be used later on and you will become more familiar with what you can do with Photoshop.

You should save all of the images into a folder titled "yourname.eye folder2"

As you work through the lessons, which are pretty easy, label the image as "026" "027" and so on.

Magazine Cover

For this project, you will be putting youself or your artwork on the front of a magazine.  Please look at an actual magazine so that you get all of the details, fonts, barcodes, pricing, etc. correct.

Make sure your final image is 300 resolution.

Label it as yourname_Magazine.jpg and put in the teacher drop box.

Project 19

DIY - Extreme Makeover

For this assignment, you will be taking an empty room and adding furniture, decorating the walls/floors/window, etc. - even adding an outdoor scene!  You want to make the room inviting, a place that's "you" - some place where your friends would like to hang out for a while...

The room template is basic - just walls, windows, floor, ceiling.  Here are the requirements:

  • decide if the room is a living room, game room, bedroom or ????
  • add a minimum of 3 large pieces of furniture (a couch, chairs, bookshelf, etc.  - or, if it's a bedroom, add bedroom furniture - add whatever you need for the type of room you have)
  • Paint the walls or wallpaper them
  • do something to the windows   (curtains, style, blinds, or you can even eliminate or move the windows)
  • do something to the floor - paint it, add a carpet, rug, tile, etc.
  • put a poster or piece of artwork on the walls - maybe two or three?
  • add some sort of lighting.
  • put other things in the room to make it inviting and "cool" (plants, baskets, etc).
  • Add a scene that you will see outside the windows - a location for your house/apt./condo, etc.

Important to remember: you need to make the furniture look like it's actually in the room.  Once you get the furniture in the room, you need to use the edit>transform>distort feature to make the furniture "fit".  The furniture should line up with the floor and the walls.  Things that should be vertical should be straight.  Make it work.

What you need:

Everything else should be online - go to furniture places to find things to up in your room.  Here are some popular furniture sites - or, you can go wherever you need to to get your shopping done.  There are many interesting furniture sites online - find a place that reflects YOUR personality!

Have fun shopping for your room and decorating it!
