Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch draughtsman and painter, classified as a Post-Impressionist. His paintings and drawings include some of the world's best known and most popular pieces. The fact that he cut off his ear is very well known, as is the belief that he was driven to an early suicide by lack of recognition of his genius. |
|
Project 6 - Pointillism This one is pretty easy - you'll be creating 3 pointillist images in the style of Georges Seurat. The first image will be a directed image. The other two will be created using one of your city and landscape images. It is important to remember that pointillist images are subtle in color. |

Pointillism is a form of painting in which tiny dots of primary-colors are used to generate secondary colors. It is an offshoot of Impressionism, and is usually categorized as a form of Post-Impressionism. Post-Impressionism is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took their art in other directions. |
|
Project 5 - Comic Strip Pop Art Images You will be creating two images in the comic style of Roy Lichtenstein. You will be first creating an image using the directions, then you will create your own image, using what you have learned in the directed lesson. |

" Sgt. Pepper" image |
|
Sgt. Pepper image You need to get started on this assignment because it may take a while. You are going to emulate the artwork on the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band" album cover. Part 1 The first thing you are going to do is decide on a theme. Choose something that you are really into - i.e. music, art, football, cartoons, baseball, etc. It should be a topic that includes a lot of people (not objects). You will need to find 64, yes 64, people related to your topic - people that are important to your topic. You will need to search and find 64 images of these people. Try to find full length figures that are not too small (because they will become pixellated when you put them into your image). First collect the images, then delete the backgrounds so that all you have is the person - no background. Save these in a folder. Part 2 of this assignment - directions |
![]() |
While you are collecting these images of people, make a list of the names of these people and write a sentence as to why they are important to your topic. This will be part of your final exam. Don't just forget about this part of the assignment.... For the Sgt. Pepper album, open the document below to see the names of the 80+ people in the image. |
|
Project 15 Digital Mandala A Mandala is a circular image that includes symbols that relate to you and your being. For this assignment, you will be creating two Mandalas - one is a directed image using at least 5 of pictures that are provided. The other mandala will be one that uses images that represent you and your life. Do not use images of people for this assignment. |
![]() |
In practice, the mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern which represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the universe from the human perspective. | |
When you have completed your second Mandala, send an email to the teacher that explains what images you used for your personal mandala and why you used those specific images. Use complete sentences and elaborate on why you chose these image. BE SPECIFIC. |

Project 12 Peter Max Style Image Peter Max is known for his widely published posters that used gradients and bright colors - almost cartoon-like. You will be creating two images in the style of Peter Max. One of the images will be a directed image that uses one of the images below. |
![]() |
Peter Max is associated with the 60's psychedelic Pop-Art movement. In the late 1960s, Peter Max was known throughout the world for his popular depictions of the world around him, both cosmic and earth-bound. During that period, he wanted to discover a way to make art accessible to everyone. |
|
Project 11 Cow Parade Cow This time, you are going to create a cow that is designed like the cow below. Look at the cows on the Cow Parade sites. Get some ideas but don't copy. Choose one of the cows from Project 10 and delete the background (background should be white). Find a pattern and overlay it on the cow. YOU will need to do some experimenting to get it to look like the cow has a pattern on it. Come up with a cool name for the cow (again, check out the cows on the Cow Parade sites to get ideas). When done, name the cow yourname."cool cow name" and put it in the teacher drop box. |
|||
Project 10 Cow Parade! CowParade is the world’s largest public art event. From Chicago and New York in 1999 and 2000 to Kansas City and Houston in 2001 and London in 2002, CowParade continues to evolve, not just in size, but in creativity and quality of art. You will be using one of the cow images below and creating 7 cow images using the techniques that you have learned so far:
Use the same image for each of the images. All of the images should be set at 250 dpi (resolution). When you are finished with ALL of the images, make a new folder, label the folder yourname.cows. Put all seven of the images in the folder and then drop the folder in the teacher drop box. |
|
While the cow sculptures remain the same, each city’s artists are challenged by the art from past events, inspired by the cultural influences of their respective cities, and moved by their own interpretation of the cow as an art object. CowParade is not meant to be high art. It is first and foremost a public art exhibit that is accessible to everyone. |
|
Project 9 "Joiners" - a Photo Collage Technique Between 1982 and 1987, artist David Hockney experimented heavily with photo collage, creating works he called joiners. A joiner consists of a series of photographs taken from different viewpoints, arranged (overlapping) to form a single piece. |
|
Images of a scene created by a number of smaller prints often overlapping and at angles rather than the simple straight line are called 'joiners'. David Hockney popularised both the method and the term in the early 1980s. |
|
Project 8 - Fauvist Style Painting Fauvism grew out of Pointillism and Post-Impressionism, but is characterized by a more primitive and less naturalistic form of expression. For this assignment, you will create two images that are in the Fauvist style. The first image will be a directed image, using one of the images below. The second image will be one of your choice. |
![]() |
Paul Gauguin's style and his use of color were especially strong influences. The artists most closely associated with Fauvism are Albert Marquet, Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. |
