KNIGHTLY CHALLENGE #3: Using Online Encyclopedias – Grolier Online
Encyclopedias are useful for giving us general background information on a variety of topics. Its usually the first source you should use to begin researching.
Directions:
- Create a heading on another sheet of paper and create a section for Knightly Challenge #3
- Open another browser window and navigate to these directions.
- In one browser widow go to the MHS Media Center home page, www.monarchknights.com/Mediacenter/index.htm. Click on the link for “research databases”. Keep the other window open at all times to the directions.
- On the MHS Databases page click on Grolier Online. Grolier contains a collection of online encyclopedias which are great for finding background information for research assignments. Grolier is also useful for finding out about current events.
- Click on the “Today is…” link. Write down one thing that happened on this day in history.
- Use the link further down on the “Today is…” page to find out about something that happened on your birthday. Write it down on your paper.
- Once your information has been recorded, close out of that screen. Next, enter the search term “knight” in the search box at the top of the Grolier homepage.
- Click on the article “Knights, Knighthood and Chivalry” from the New Book of Knowledge (The key or legend on the left explains the colored symbols).
- Recall the lesson from your Knight Seminar class about note taking and summarizing. Use this knowledge to complete the next task.
- Scroll through the article or use the Table of Contents and find the section on the Knight’s Code. Read through this section then on your paper compare and contrast the Knights’Code of Chivalry to that of the Monarch High's Knight Code of Conduct.
- Cite this article. Be sure to follow the correct format for this type of source. (Hint- this is an online encyclopedia)

Excellent work! You’ve now earned another KEY OF KNOWLEDGE and well on your way.
