KNIGHTLY CHALLENGE #6: Locating Information in SIRS Researcher database
Directions:
1. Open another browser window and navigate to these directions.
2. In one browser widow go to the MHS Media Center home page, www.monarchknights.com/Mediacenter/index.htm click on the Research Databases link then on the SIRS Researcher link. Keep the other window open at all times to the directions.
3. SIRS Researcher includes full text articles covering social, economic, scientific, health, historic, business, political and global issues. Go to the "That's Debatable" section on the upper right-hand side of the page. Go ahead and vote on the debatable question of the day. Be sure to click the Vote button.
4. Write a short statement why you voted the way you did. Remember, there are no wrong answers, this is your opinion.
5. What were the Poll Results? (What percentage of people voted Yes and what percentage voted No?)
6. Now, go back to the SIRS home page and click on one of the "Your Top 10 Pro vs. Con Leading Issues".
7. Notice the three tabs at the top. The Overview tab gives you a brief summary of the topic. The Pro/Con tab gives both sides of the issues. The My Analysis tab provides a step-by-step guide to researching the topic and creating a presentation.
8. Click on the My Analysis tab and quickly read through the steps. When you get to the last step, Apply your knowledge, click on the "Guide to Writing a Research Paper" link. (the paper will download to your desktop, just double click on the icon from your desktop if the paper does not automatically open for you)
9. Take a few minutes to read through the Guide to Writing a Research Paper. Would you use this guide if you had to write a paper on this topic? Why or why not? Remember that under the My Analysis tab there were other helpful options that you may want to use in the future. Guide to writing a mini research paper, creating a powerpoint presentation and creating a debate outline.
10. Now, go back to the SIRS Researcher page you were on. After the My Analysis box you will see a row of article options for you to choose from. Click on the Viewpoints, the one with the eye symbol. Choose one of those articles and write a pro or con paragraph stating your views on this issue and why you feel that way.
11. Write the citation for this article.
